WA Mammals 09. Irrawaddy Dolphin to Dugong

 

Irrawaddy Dolphin

Orcaella brevirostris

Now called Australian Snubfin Dolphin.  Occurs off the Kimberley coast usually in shallow muddy water.  Two seen in Roebuck Bay near Broome in December 2002, January 2004 and September 2004.

 

Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin

Sousa chinensis

Seen at Monte Bello Islands.

 

Rough-toothed Dolphin

Steno bredanensis

Vagrant off Kimberley coast.  Eight seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2006.

 

Southern Rightwhale Dolphin

Lissadelphis peronii

Vagrant off south coast.

 

Risso's Dolphin

Grampus griseus

Occurs south of Tropic of Capricorn.  Five plus seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2008.

 

Fraser's Dolphin

Lagendelphis hosei

Occurs north of about Geraldton.  A group of twenty, and a group of up to 100 seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2006.  Both groups were associated with Spinner Dolphins, and the first group also with Short-flippered Pilot Whales.

Occurs north of Augusta.  Seen on a few pelagic trips out of Hillarys.  Fifty seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2006.

Occurs north of Augusta.  Seen near Ashmore Reef.  Five groups of up to 200 seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2006.  Seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2008.

Seen at Barred Creek near Broome.  Seen on Hillarys pelagic trips.  Four seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2006.

Mostly seen inshore.  Seen at Shoalwater Bay, Swan River, Hillarys pelagic trips, Monkey Mia.

Occurs south of the Kimberleys.

Occurs south of Exmouth.

 

Short-flippered Pilot Whale

Globicephala macrorhynchus

Occurs north of Geraldton.  Five groups of up to twenty seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2006.

 

Melon-headed Whale

Occurs north of Carnarvon.  Seen on Ashmore Reef trip.  Fifty seen on trip from Broome to Ashmore Reef in October 2006.

 

Pygmy Killer Whale

Feresa attenuata

Occurs north of Perth.

Occurs south of Perth.  Seen at Cape Naturaliste, Cape Leeuwin, Albany, Epserance.

Occurs south of the Kimberleys.  Seen on Hillarys pelagic trip.  15+ seen on Hillarys pelagic trip in August 2004.

Reported between Ashmore Reef and Scott Reef in early November 1999.

Occurs south of Exmouth.

 

True's Beaked Whale

Mesoplodon mirus

Vagrant south of Geraldton.

 

Hector's Beaked Whale

Mesoplodon hectori

Vagrant south of Perth.  One reported at Cheyne Beach in May 2004.

 

Gray's Beaked Whale

Mesoplodon grayi

Occurs south of Bunbury.  Six reported beached in Geographe Bay near Busselton in January 2003.  Several reported beached near Mandurah and on Garden Island in April 2004.

Vagrant south of Cape Naturaliste.

 

Arnoux's Beaked Whale

Occurs south of Cape Naturaliste.

Occurs south of Shark Bay.

 

Dugong

Dugong dugon

Occurs north of Shark Bay.  Reported in Shark Bay, Broome, Monte Bellos.  Seen off Monkey Mia in December 2005.
